Storage Firewood - How to Store Your Firewood and Avoid Potential Problems
As the cold months of winter approach, there is nothing like knowing you have plenty of firewood to keep you warm all winter long. One problem is firewood takes up a lot of space. Do you need a storage firewood shed or are there other good ways to store your firewood?
One of the most important things in storing firewood is to keep it dry. If you store it outside you can cover it with a tarp or plastic sheeting. This can keep the rain off but it can also hold moisture in and encourage the wood to decay. You can leave the sides uncovered so the air can circulate but then the wood on the side will get wet. That is if the storm doesn't blow the tarp off to rip it to shreds.
Tarps are also not very convenient when you go out to bring in some wood to burn. Water will pool on the top and when you pull it off to get the wood out it can make a wet mess.
Stored firewood makes excellent rodent habitat. Rats, mice and other rodents often make nests in firewood piles and multiply. From there they can move onto your buildings including your home.
You could store your firewood in a garage but most people have better uses for their garages. It also brings in insects and makes a good place for spiders, rodents and insects to live. Firewood is known for being messy and most people don't want that mess to get into the other things they store in the garage.
The best place to keep your wood is a storage firewood shed. A properly built shed will keep the wood dry, allow air circulation and keep rodents and other pests out. You can go out in the shed to bring in wood and not have to deal with a wet tarp. If the storage shed has a floor your wood will be off the ground which will keep it clean and also help keep it dry.
There are many storage firewood options but the best way to store your firewood is in it's own woodshed. Woodshed can be built inexpensively plus you won't have to pay for a new tarp every year.
